Rock(et) the Vote!

Each year, we challenge our campers to design a mission patch that will become the official emblem of Space Adventure Camp. This year, campers were asked to create a mission patch design inspired by one or more of these themes:

  • Aerospace: Campers will explore various facets of aerospace engineering, including rocketry and sUAS (drones).

  • Robotics + Coding: Campers also engage in robotics design and coding utilizing LEGO® SPIKE™ Prime and Arduino kits.

  • STEM Careers: STEM career awareness is a key component of Space Adventure Camp. STEM careers are rewarding and come in all shapes and sizes.

  • Connection with Fellow Campers: Many campers express the sentiment that “they have found their people” during and after camp. Make new friends with like-minded individuals at camp this summer.

You can view each design below, including the artist's comments. After viewing the designs, you can vote daily for your favorite design at the bottom of this page. Your vote will help decide which patch design is the 2024 winner!

The camper with the winning patch will work with our staff to refine their design, creating the 2024 Camp Mission Patch. This patch will become the emblem for this summer's camp and be featured on the camper t-shirts and all camp-related items and media.

Patch A

Artist’s Comments: I added two planets, Earth and Mars. I also added Earth's moon. I drew a rocket with the VASFA logo on it, flying to the moon. Above the moon, I added the year 2024. At the very bottom, I added the words "Space Adventure Camp.” There are little stars in the background.

Patch B

Artist’s Comments: I wanted to choose a creative shape so I chose a rocket flying over the Earth with the moon next to it. There is fire going out of it to represent our constant momentum forward. The rocket has many details inside of it. For starters, there are the words: VASFA, to Mars and 2024•Space Camp. The To Mars is to represent the missions to Mars. This is similar to the reason for the dotted line. It is representative of our path towards Mars. The 9 stars represent the number of flights ingenuity flew (since 72 is a lot I added the numbers.) There is a small ingenuity in the corner to pay homage. This year is the year that the helicopter sadly flew it's last flight. Thanks for reading all of this and I hope you vote for me! :)

Patch C

Artist’s Comments: It is an astronaut helmet in the middle around it the name of the academy with circles on the outside representing the great things about camp.

Patch D

Artist’s Comments: My patch design is a computer wide open. The computer has a picture of a rocket in space. The screen is basically code, the code is coding the rocket where to go in space.

Patch E

Artist’s Comments: In my patch, there are the initials of the camp, a rocket ship, a robot arm in the window of the rocket ship, and 5 letters in binary surrounding the ship. There is also a blue background. The ship represents the aerospace engineering that campers will learn. The robot arm represents the robotics part of "Robotics + Coding." The binary represents the coding part of "Robotics + Coding" The binary also spells out VASFA, the initials of the camp.

Patch F

Artist’s Comments: My mission patch shows a robot carrying a girl up from Earth towards the stars. The flames boosting the robot represent the effort of humanity. That is what fuels our expedition to space and VASFA is an important part of that. The robot represents the technology that brings us yet another step closer to the far reaches of space. To me this is the future of space travel and exploration.

Patch G

Artist’s Comments: A girl builds and launches a ship for space adventures. Even the sky is not the limit. I chose the aerospace theme. I made a spaceship flying around the world with an astronaut. The rocket presents my rocket ship that I would build in future.

Patch H

Artist’s Comments: My elements are all about space and all the friends you can make at the VASFA space camp.

Patch I

Artist’s Comments: My patch design has a rocket preparing to launch, which represents preparing for future space explorations that VASFA teaches kids about.

Patch J

Artist’s Comments: My patch is of an astronaut and an alien high-fiving with a black background with stars and an earth below them. There is a ring around the outside with the words Virginia Space Flight Academy Camp on it. The theme I chose was Connection With Others.

Patch K

Artist’s Comments: Computer with VASFA spelled in binary code on the surface of the moon with Earth in the background.

Patch L

Artist’s Comments: Steam and aerospace. It's an image of an airplane with smoke coming out of it that says STEAM.

Patch M

Artist’s Comments: This patch includes statistics of launches at Wallops, and a drawing of the ELECTRON rocket from Rocket Lab that was launched as well. The star marks where the camp is located.

Patch N

Artist’s Comments: I created a 'Healthy Cooking' patch. Most people like food because it’s delicious and necessary, but I believe I have an even deeper appreciation for food. I was diagnosed with high cholesterol four years ago, which prompted me to start seeking out healthier alternatives to regular foods. Cooking and baking are my favorite pastimes. Whenever I need to relax or have friends and family coming over, I always cook. I love making healthier meals and finding new recipes to try. As a vegetarian, I like experimenting with different foods to replace meat. One last reason that I love food is because food is delicious. I always get specific cravings, which makes it hard to find food because my parents might not have the time or ingredients to make it. My cravings give me even more of a reason to cook and bake. It doesn't matter if I am eating it, researching it, watching videos of it, or making it, but food is one thing that has been a big part of my life and will be. My patch shows a salad because that is one of my favorite healthy foods.

Patch O

Artist’s Comments: A robotic arm with all the planets and stars behind it and a rocket in the background.

Patch P

Artist’s Comments: My design features the space shuttle for Aerospace. The sun and moon are to represent the solar eclipse this year.
