VASFA Partners with NNPS to Empower Students

Virginia Space Flight Academy (VASFA) is proud to announce its new partnership with Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) as part of a $2 million grant awarded by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). The five-year initiative, titled "Mission STEM: Pioneering Pathways in Robotics and Space Exploration," will provide students across 12 NNPS schools with unique opportunities to dive into advanced STEM fields such as robotics, space exploration, and autonomous systems. This collaboration aims to inspire the next generation of innovators and aerospace professionals through hands-on learning experiences.

Each year, VASFA will engage over 450 students in a variety of STEM programs designed to ignite curiosity and foster a deep interest in STEM careers. Students in grades 6 through 8 will participate in VASFA’s renowned STEM Academy, where they will explore interactive modules on subjects like astronomy, aeronautics, and robotics. Additionally, NNPS high school students will have the chance to attend a new aerospace day camp that VASFA is designing exclusively for them, giving them hands-on experience with aerospace technology and rocket science.

One of the highlights of this partnership is the Space Adventure Camp, where each summer, 30 NNPS students will attend VASFA’s premier space camp on Wallops Island. These students will gain an in-depth understanding of real-world space exploration, tour NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, and interact with STEM professionals. With professional development opportunities for teachers as well, this initiative aims to not only inspire students but also provide educators with the tools to bring these aerospace concepts to life in their classrooms.

By working together, VASFA and NNPS are committed to creating new pathways for students to explore the exciting possibilities in STEM and aerospace, ultimately preparing them for successful careers in these growing fields.
